Cool Cutlass or Short Sword

Here is a unique short sword that we picked up. The overall length is 33.5 inches with the blade length at just over 27 inches and is an 1.5 inch wide. The brass guard has a nice mellow patina throughout. One branch of the guard is cracked, but still fits into place.
The wire appears to be original but appears to have been shortened and reapplied. The wrap is original and is reminiscent of what I have seen on some early Confederate Cavalry sabers. It does have what appears to be a thumb 'rest' to add leverage to the swing.
We've not encountered anything like this and for those that have seen it are also stumped. So we are open to hearing what you think. Nonetheless, it is impressive and is really cool looking.
