M1860 Spencer Carbine identified to George W. Kirkpatrick of the 72nd Indiana Mounted Infantry. The carbine is serial number 17027 and is in overall good condition. The iron is smooth throughout with some very minor pitting along the right side of the barrel - however, it has a nice plum brown hughe throughout. All of the markings can be easily seen, including the serial number and Spencer patent information on the breech. It retains the front and rear site, and sling bar w/ ring. It also has the rear sling mount on the butt of the gun. The action works perfectly with the loading lever dropping the block - the hammer responds to the trigger. It has the correct loading tube for a M1860.

The stock is in good condition as well - showing no signs of active cracks or repairs. It has a nice dark tone as well. It shows signs of use with the usual dings and mars throughout the forearm stock and butt stock. One area to mention, and can be seen in the pics, is on the right of the buttstock, there is an area where some of the wood had been chipped away. The wood in this area is so very worn that the damage had to have happened when the gun was in the field. It does not weaken the stock and does not detract from it, it is only mentioned for exactness. Behind the sling mount there is one government cartouche. Wilder's men secured purchase for the original batch of Spencer Rifles - not the carbines - so when the later issue of these weapons occured in mid to late 1864 - carbines were getting issued as well as rifles.

If I remember correctly - the gun was obtained directly through the family - which at the time of the sale - still had Kirkpatrick's sword and diary - which is where the carbine is identified (there is a document outlining this in the paperwork). The documentation included with this weapon are copies of his service record, a letter from the Tippecanoe County Area Geneaological Society dated 1998 outlining some family history of Kirkpatrick, and 3 photocopied pages from his diary (still in the family's possesion) of the front of the diary, and the page that is written "Spencer Car 17027".

George W. Kirkpatrick was 28years old when he enlisted into the Federal Army as an Assistant Surgeon into the 72nd Indiana. He started his service on January 11th, 1864 and was mustered into the 72nd in April of 1864, according to his muster card - "joined from citizen and mustered in as asst surg to fill vacancy since Cole promoted". He would be mustered out in 1865 in Nashville, Tn. George had an older brother, Samuel, who also served in the unit who enlisted as a Major and would eventually be promoted to Lt. Colonel.

This along with some of the other I'd Spencer Rifles come out of a long time collection out of Georgia focusing specifically on Wilder's Brigade. There will be no other opportunity for the amount of Wilder's memorabilia like this for quite sometime.
