Civil War Carbines
Triplett & Scott Repeating Carbine

Triplett and Scott Repeating Carbine in good condition. The iron is smooth throughout and shows no pitting through its dark tone. This particular specimen is of the 30-inch barrel length, of which approximately 3,000 were made. It retains the rear folding sight as well as the original front sight. The serial number on this one is ‘946’ which is an early one and is marked so on the right of the frame. The two sling rings are missing, the top merely removed, while the lower one was simply cut off. These would have been mounted on the top and bottom of the butt stock, not uncommon for either one or both to be missing. All other components are present and accounted for.

The markings are present and easily seen throughout including the patent information on the barrel tang, the fore mentioned serial number, and the Meridian Mfg Company stamp on the left side of the frame. The well known ‘Kentucky’ is also present. I could not get it in the image, but you can also see the faint ‘N/WB’ inspector’s mark on the left side of the stock near the butt plate. The most unique thing about the gun is its unusual swivel breech loading mechanisms and it still works. The button release spring is good and the hammer pulls back and responds to the trigger.

The walnut stock is in good condition and though appears to have a slightly different tone in the images, the tone and darkening matches fairly evenly with the rest of the gun, meaning that I do not believe that anything has been done to the piece. Most of the time you will see a significant crack along the left side of the wrist from the recoil and stress caused by the loading tube, there is a stress fracture here but it is not significant on this particular gun. This is a nice gun overall.

There was a contract issued for 5,000 of these weapons January 1865 with the state of Kentucky to arm Home Guard Troops that were supplying supply lines for Sherman’s Army. But by the time these were to pressed into service, the war had ended.

M1860 Spencer Carbine - Cartouches

M1860 Spencer Carbine with a serial number in the 60,000 range. The overall condition of the weapon is that of an attic type condition. The iron has some pitting evenly throughout the gun giving it a dark tone throughout. The butt plate is pitted in a way that matches the rest of the gun. There does no appear to be any replacement parts on the gun which still retains the folding rear sight, side bar with ring, and rear sling ring which is heavily pitted and frozen into place. You can see the address markings on the breech of the weapon as well as the serial number on top of the frame behind the hammer. The lever does drop the block and the action does work appropriately.

The wood stock shows a few more dings and mars than you would normally see on a weapon, but this no doubt saw the elephant. The fore stock is in good condition and shows no repairs. The butt stock appears to have been damp at some point as indicated by some of the minor deterioration that is seen, especially around the tang of the butt plate – this is also supported by the condition of the rear sling ring as previously described. You will notice behind the side bar that there are two government cartouches still showing. There are no other markings on the gun.

It does have an original loading tube in place, but it is of the second model and the bore could use a little cleaning, but there is still good rifling present. This is a good Spencer for someone who doesn’t want to pay the $2,500 ++ that some of the nicer carbines are brining. This one displays nicely and has the feel of having actually been there.

I'd M1860 Spencer Carbine - 7th Pennsylvannia Cavalry - Private James Smith

Here is a really cool Spencer Carbine from the 7th Pennsylvannia Cavalry in overall good condition. The iron is in good condition with a light brown hughe throughout. It is smooth throughout with some light modeling noted. The barrel is full length at 22inches with the front sight, the rear sight is missing. The walnut stock is in good condition and as far as I can tell, has not been messed with. There are the usual dings and mars noted. There is a small hairline crack noted on the bottom of the butt stock, basically running right along with the loading tube, which is not unusual to see on heavily used Spencer.

The side bar & saddle ring are present, as is the barrel band, the rear sling ring. The loading tube is the correct for the model. The action works and the hammer does respond to the trigger. All of the markings are present, the serial number 15036 can be easily seen, the address on the top of the reciever is visible, but is worn. On the left wrist stock is an inspector's cartouche which is visible. You can also see in the images that there is a "E.J." carved into the stock.

This Carbine is identified to Private James Smith of the 7th Pennsylvannia Cavalry and along with this carbine is a letter from Springfield Research Service dated 2005 which confirms this: "Carbine serial no. 15036, pleased be advised that the records of the Army Adjutant General's office show that this arm was used in Company E, 7th Pennsylvannia Volunteer Cavalry, during the Civil War. The records of that company show your carbine was issued to Private James Smith." This makes you wonder why the intials are EJ - may be a nickname or something to the soldier, he was in Company E - but goes to show initials aren't everything.

This carbine also comes with a yellow 7th Pennsylvannia reunion ribbon that is in good condition and meaures about 6.75inches. It is dark yellow and is dated October 6 & 7th 1885 - Watsontown.

This grouping comes with the Carbine, The Reunion Ribbon, COA, The Springfield Research Letter, and copies of his service record.
