Ames US Naval Cutlass w/ Scabbard

Very cool looking Ames Naval Cutlass with leather scabbard in good condition. The sword has a full length blade with some minor pitting noted and modeling evently throughout. It does have gun metal gray tone noted. On the ricasso you can clearly see the "USN / D.R. / 1862" and on the opposite is worn away with a very faint memory of the Ames scroll mark. The leather washer is missing in action. As with most of these specimens the grip is missing the wire and about 80% of the leather wrap, what is present is hardened some, exposing the wood handle which is solid. The brass guard has a nice pleasing mellow patina throughout with the typical dings and bumps noted. It is solid and tight. You can see that the guard is marked "17M / 515" which is more than likely a rack number. The pommel cap is also marked with the inspector 'DR'.

The leather scabbard covers the entire blade except for the tip, whereas any scabbard at all for these swords is an uncommon occurance. The leather remains pliable and supple with the typical crazing that you would expect to see. There is a slight weak spot about half way down, but it remains intact and with proper handling will last the ages. The stitching down the spine of the scabbard remains intact and solid. You can see the holes near the top where the attachment for the frog was. The images tell the rest of the tale.

Together, it makes a really nice display piece and with this date of 1862, could be displayed either with your Deep Water or Brown Water naval display.

US Naval Cutlass

Typical Model 1860 Naval Cutlass in decent condition.  The blade show minor to moderate pitting and appears to have been shortened at the tip.  The length of the blade is 24.75 inches.  On the ricasso you can see the “USN” over “DR” stamp.  The brass guard has been cleaned at one point though remains intact and solid.  On the inside of the guard there are rack numbers “16/466/BI” stamped, see images.  The leather and wire wrap remain intact and are original which makes this unique in that in most cases, this is missing.  On the grip is some buildup from when this was cleaned.  It can be easily removed.  There is no scabbard.

ca1820 Sword by Horstmann

Here is a magnificent caM1820 sword by Horstmann & co. The sword itself has a beautiful blade which shows some minor modeling, but no pitting that I can see. It retains most all of its bluing and gold leaf on both sides, one side is a little better than the other. Otherwise it has a nice military motiff of a drum and cannon. The edge does have a few flea bites, but nothing the detracts from the overall presentation. On the ricasso on both sides is "Horstmann & Co" and you can see it retains the washer. The iron guard has a nice dark patina throughout with no pitting that I can see. The sword comes with a scabbard that fits the sword like a glove. There is no damage noted and it has the rings and mounts still present as is the throat. This is a great looking sword.
