Here is a great sword for the beginner collector, a original M1860 Ames Cavalry saber with scabbard. The blade shows some modeling throughout with minimal pitting noted. There are some nicks down the edge of the blade and the tip is slightly rounded. The ricasso is marked 'US / JF / 18??' probably 1865. The opposite has the Ames scroll mark. As you can see the brass guard has a nice reddish brass / attic patina throughout. The leather is original and the wire may have been professionally repaired at some point - but it is hard to tell. The scabbard has a bright tone throughout which appears to have been over cleaned at some point. The drag has a pair of inspector's initials and an '88'. The sword fits it like a glove.
